Two Tin House debut authors were at Powell’s last night. Katie Arnold-Ratliff read from her just released novel “Bright Before Us” and then talked about how long it took to write: “five years to write a bunch of stuff I threw away and then five months to write this.” Amazing, considering she works full time as an Assistant Editor at O, the Oprah Magazine. She says she writes an hour before starting work and then an hour after work at her O office. She’s already hard at work on her next book – a kind of “non-fiction novel.” Scott Sparling, author of the amazing upcoming novel “Wire To Wire,” was in the audience as well. Both books rate high on my list for their haunting portrayals of flawed characters. Read reviews of both of their books on this site.
