Why Peter Carey Doesn’t Attend Writers’ Conferences
Peter Carey, a two-time Man Booker Prize winner, was at Powell’s last week with his new book The Chemistry of Tears. He was asked if he ever attends writers’ conferences in Australia? He replied:
“Do I ever attend writers’ conferences? I sort of try not to, really. I don’t much like writers’ festivals, really. We always sort of buzz around each other suffering extreme status anxiety. And when I’m back in Australia I sometimes tend to say unfortunate things, or things that are understood in an unfortunate way. So I’d rather go to Australia just to see my family.”
One of the main characters in The Chemistry of Tears is a beguiling silver swan automaton. Click on the link to watch a video of the bird in action at London’s Bowes Museum where it performs once a day for 30 seconds: Silver Swan Automaton.
